KAY GIBBONS GLASS ART
BIOGRAPHY
My name is Kay an artist working with glass from my studio in South Oxfordshire. I work to commission making windows for public buildings and domestic settings. I also teach Beginners Stained Glass workshops on the last Sundays of the month in my studio space in Abingdon.
My journey into glass began quite unexpectedly. I was asked to consider designing and making a window for the refurbished unit at The Phoenix Unit, Littlemore Hospital where I had been a patient . I accepted the opportunity, wanting to bring colour and beauty into the space , wishing to uplift and alleviate the sadness and darkness of those who stayed there temporarily.
I was then invited to be Artist in Residence for Artscape and as such went onto my next public building commission at The Warneford Hospital in Oxford where I designed and made a window for the Main Corridor.
Following this I accepted a commission to design and create a window in The Sanctuary Faith Room at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford.
This window is included in the book,
‘The Stained Glass and Chapels of Oxford’ – by Dominic Price.
When I design a window I like to get a sense for the place it will be situated. I like to involve the clients as much as possible, recently asking a family to colour my design for their window onto paper so that I could use their colour choices so then they could in a sense ‘own’ the window as theirs.
I owe much to the late Vital Peeters, a very dear friend who taught me how to make my first window and set me on the path I’m on now as a Stained glass artist.
I am a prolific artist. I also paint and sculpt. I have an abstract style which is linear, free-flowing and full of movement. This is counterbalanced by other work which is more rigidly geometric in its use of pattern, shape and form.
There is a fluid interplay between my glasswork designs and my 2D work.
I am so fortunate to be able to spend my days thriving in what I create and how. My creativity is boundless and what joy it is to be able to say so and to share it with so many people.
