KAY GIBBONS GLASS ART

BIOGRAPHY

Kay Gibbons is a Stained glass artist working from her studio in South Oxfordshire. Kay works to commission making windows for public buildings and in domestic settings.

Kay teaches Beginners Stained Glass workshops on the last Sundays of the month in her studio space in Abingdon.

Kay’s journey into glass began quite unexpectedly. She was asked to consider designing and making a window for the refurbished unit at The Phoenix Unit, Littlemore Hospital where she had been a patient. Kay accepted the opportunity with a desire to bring colour and beauty into the space, wishing to uplift and alleviate the sadness and darkness of those who stayed there temporarily.

Kay was then invited to be Artist in Residence for Artscape and as such went onto my her next public building commission at The Warneford Hospital in Oxford where she designed and made a large window for the Main Corridor.

Following this Kay accepted a commission to design and create a window in The Sanctuary Faith Room at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford .

This window is included in the book, ‘The Stained Glass and Chapels of Oxford’ – author: Dominic Price.

When designing windows Kay likes to get a sense of the place the window will be situated in and reflect this in the overall design. It is important for Kay to involve the clients as much as possible, recently asking a family to colour in copies of their chosen design so that she could use their colour choices and in a sense become part of the design ‘team’. The window then takes on a personal element for them.

I owe much to the late Vital Peeters, a very dear friend who taught me how to make my first window and set me on the path I’m on now as a Stained glass artist.

Kay is a prolific artist. She also paints and sculpts. She has an abstract style which is linear, free flowing and full of movement. This is counterbalanced by other work which is more rigidly geometric in its use of pattern, shape and form.

There is a fluid interplay between her glasswork designs and her 2D work.

Kay’s creativity is boundless – She takes delight in sharing it with so many people and bringing joy to others.
